Day 29 - Sandy Cove, Tilting, Fogo Island, NL

Cold!  Turpin's Trail
Day 29, June 1, 2016 Sandy Cove, Fogo Island, NL Awoke at sunrise 4 am here to whistling wind and a rocking motorhome. Then the rain came…went back to sleep. Spent some early morning hours waiting for weather to calm a bit. Walk to Turpin’ Tail trailhead from our motorhome in little park on Sandy cove. This time we walked the trail in a clockwise direction. Last time did it counterclockwise and we got about ¾ to 7/8 around the walk only to find the bridge was out and it wasn’t a stream you just hop across. It took a good 1.5 hours for us to find a way around without getting our feet wet.

Wild seas
After a goof up or two and we ended up bog hopping and David still got his feet wet. The first part of the walk was in trees and we were bundled up to the hilt in the 39 degree weather. We were well warmed up from walking when we emerged from the spruce/balsam boreal forest into the very open fen/barrens.

more Turpin's trail
This was a really good thing because in this open area we were getting blasted with wind. My 108 lbs. was no match and I resembled a drunken sailor; David threatened to make me into a kite with a string. About 1/2 of the hike was in the open but at least some of that was protected by hills. A really nice hike and, of course, we were the only ones on this trail. Today’s high is 41 degrees! Hey, but no bugs! Happy to be hiking in Newfoundland. A fox crossed our path ahead of us today. Caribou scat but no animal. The afternoon was spent cooking and watching an iceberg come into Salt Cove.

To begin with, we could see the top of it above the hills and you could tell it was moving at a nice clip. It then grounded on one side of Sandy Cove for us to watch as long as we wished. Well, we got a bit tired of sitting around resting after our walk so we decided to finish the other bit of Turpin’s Trail to go see the iceberg up close and personal. Now it was just as windy but at least the sun was out…fought our way through the wind to a perfect spot to watch the berg for as long as we could stand it. There was a film crew there filming for Canada so we were asked to stay out of their way as they tried to do a 360 film.

We did for awhile but then I got cold from sitting and off we went letting them do retakes or whatever. Besides there was a women coming down the trail in a bright red parka that they were now going to see….hahaha! Our little trek enabled us to see our second iceberg up close and personal (one in 2013 and it also calved). This one calved as well as we were sitting there long enough… Estimate of 6+ miles walked today. Mr. Buddy heater is successfully keeping up with the cold 41 degree daytime temperature today. We’ve got to conserve propane until our next fill up so no heat on the wall…need it for cooking and refrigerator.
