Day 26 - Frenchman's Cove to Southern Bay (Bonavista Peninsula)

Frenchman's Cove area picnic park
Day 26/May 29, 2016 Frenchman’s Cove to Southern Bay (old VIC) 39 degrees outside this a.m. and a little warmer in the rv but we were warm enough. The sun shines upon us today! Crank up Mr.Buddy heater. Since Frenchman’s Cove Provincial Park was just a few miles away, we decided to get a seasonal permit and see what trails they had for us. We walked their short William Tapper trail and had a look at the campground…nice!

We filled up with potable water and were on our way. Upon recommendation of the man at the Provincial Park we went to Winterland and found a great trail to walk on (lots of boardwalks and gravel = no wet feet) through bog, fen, boreal forest, etc. While there we added to our list for our next trip down this peninsula with a recommendation from a woman on the trail.Marytown for some food, wifi, and to dump our tanks because we can for free.

Our walk in Hinterland
Drive the 2 hours to Clarenville to make a few phone calls since we just happen to have the wrong carrier. We are done with Burin Peninsula for this trip. Our phone was supposed to work in Newfoundland but we can only get it in a few of the biggest towns. With daughter buying her first home solo (and it’s a foreclosure), we’ve needed to be available to answer some questions…kind of hard with the wrong cell service.

Next time we would get a Canadian Bell phone with add on minutes just to have for emergencies at home, etc. We are working our way back to do a hike that we did last time (2013) in the fog and missed much of the scenery because of it. This time when we were in the area it was rainy/fog so we skipped it intending to go on a sunny day. The Skerwink trail is highly rated by National Geographic and it is not a weekend.

Our overnight parking spot tonight is a mystery. It will appear to us once we see it. It did and it wasn’t going to be scenic tonight. We are about 15 minutes away from our hike on the Skerwink trail. We are parked in an old regional tourist information center on a main road (but not the TCH) but its Sunday night and rather quiet. We stayed here three years ago as well.
