Day 22 Sat, Oct 19

Sat, Oct 19
We did the 10am tour of the fossil shelter. It was well worth the $5 each. The shelter held numerous ichthyosaurs piled someone on top of one another, their death caused by some event that killed them all off and they then sank to the bottom of the sea here. Any that were discovered in this park were found due to erosion unearthing them. When they have done all they want to do with them, they cover them back up. Interesting talk. Today is a cloudy cool day so we took mutt for a walk and had a campfire.
I asked the ranger how long he had been living here (in one of the mining houses…I would like to see that set up…it is off grid) and it is almost 20 years. I asked him about food and he drives weekly to Fallon (about 90 miles) to load up. They have had a hard time getting interns or summer workers….
Late afternoon we took a jeep exploration to Ione, Nevada a “town” a few miles up the gravel road. The sign states that 41 souls live there. I found out from the ranger we passed coming back in that, in fact, only two homesteaders live there off grid. He lived there for six years until the utilities commission turned off the man who was providing electricity to those that lived there. Everyone moved out except the two people homesteading. Wish I had known that when we were there as I would have explored more. We saw a lone coyote and a group of cows together at the “watering station”. He was very skittish even though we were back far and even the cows creeped him when they got close to him. We both agreed that was an interesting side trip.
