Weds, Oct 1: Big horns Boondocking
David had some more ideas about the heater fixing project so he tried more things. Meanwhile I got up at 5:30 to take pills and put the heater on 1. It was 47 degrees in the rv this morning. The little heater worked well enough with a fleece on. It was warm enough by 8:30 to turn off heater and open door to the sun. Less clouds than yesterday so more solar power.
Garmin weather again said zero percent change of rain...lets see how inaccurate he is this time. No rain but more clouds than we would have liked for charging batteries.
We were attempting to make gluten free cookies from a mix while David was juicing up the batteries. AT any rate I smelled something like ambesol. David knew where to look. Smoke billowing out from the power bank under the dinette seat. I tossed Mali dog outside...she freaks at smoke alarm. David is pulling apart the dinette seat to get at LITHIUM battery bank and find what is actually smoking. He could see small flames. He is pulling stuff out. I am the emergency back up. Mali is outside freaking/shaking. Long story short it was the converter not being happy. He did manage to get it out and without using our fire extinguisher....which by the way is not rated for lithium. SOOOO, had the batteries begun to flame, 100% chance rv would have been total toast. We would have been grabbing only important things to save. We are a GOOD 45 minutes from any town and zero cell service. Lesson learned...maybe we need a go bag each plus dog.
I did make cookies though.
