Day 24: Monday, Oct 22, 2018 - Valley of the Gods

Day 24: Monday, Oct 22
A very quiet night was had by all.  Last night, the wind kicked up and it rained a bit but not much or for long.  The short off road trail that we are camping on is not graveled but hard packed so being UTAH red dirt it gets really sticky and sloppy when wet.  There is evidence of that (ruts) in a couple of places where we are; room for maybe two or three more small rv’s but that wouldn’t make me happy at all.  Today we spent the day exploring the Valley of the Gods with the JEEP and walking.  It is a 17 mile road with some dips and is like a miniature Monument valley but you can boondock here.  There are no official trails but we did explore on foot.

While traveling the 17 mile VOG roadway, we discovered a young women obviously stuck on one of the side dirt roads…stuck to the frame  of her car in sand.  She was sideway on the road (like trying to turn around) but obviously didn’t make the turn and did get into the ditch.  She had only been stuck 15 minutes so she was in luck!  Using our farmer jack and two british males that we flagged down, the men were able to push her out.  Her lucky day for sure as she was in the process of calling the rental car company ($$).

After lunch we drove up and down MOKI DUGWAY in the Jeep (no rv’s allowed or advised and rightfully so…steep and swtichbacks).  Moki Dugway is a road that is built to take  smaller vehicles (carst, pickups, motorcycles and I’ve seen mini vans) from the valley floor to the top of Cedar Mesa.  The road was wider than I thought in most parts and a beautiful ride.  I am not sure why it was built as there had to have been major blasting and this is not a well populated area. It is very scenic though…awesome views from the top and you could see our dot of an rv waiting for us to return.

We could see that there was a storm blowing in and decided to not stay the second night within VOG but just outside on gravel.  We wanted to move on the next day and there was potential with rain for us to have to stay a few more nights to let our “driveway” dry out.  The wind kicked up rain, lightening and some thunder.  Collected water off roof for use in toilet.  We will be back.
