Baby moose in FREEZE mode |
UGH, noisy night last night in Deer Lake VIC. The Irving K is next door so truck stop alley with trucks coming in pretty late. Then there is apparently an airport nearby because very early I heard an airplane fly over my head…. This is one case you get what you pay for…at least I didn’t pay for the noise.
Green Gardens Trail |
We
headed off to the auto parts store to get a hydraulic jack that could be used
if we should need to change a tire in this motorhome…oops! Check that off our list. Tim Horton’s to check emails with their
wifi.
Green Gardens Trail |
We
then drove to Gros Morne National Park.
WOW…awesome views…big mountains and just speechless views. I planned that we would do the longest hike
today. Green Gardens trail (the short
version) is 5.4 miles long (9 kilometers)…great walk. Up a bit to start but easy up, then down,
down, down on steps (not the kind that have planks on them which would have
make it easier, nicer)…some more up, then down, down, down to the sea. We walked on the beach; I soaked in the view
and just rested for the return trip (pretty much all UP, UP, UP). Sat in the
red plastic lawn chairs they put out for usJ Reminded me of Scotland. Oh, the cool part…on the way down we hear
this weird noise…kind of chirping but not really…we see the bushes move and out
pops a baby moose about 8 – 10 feet away…way cool. But I am thinking that mama ain’t gonna be
happy about this so hurry up and take the picture David!!! She squeaked a few sqeaks and then stopped
(lucky for us). Maybe she thought it was
mama? Don’t know. CUTE! I was ready to run if mama appeared….because
mama was going to be mad!
The beach at Green Gardens |
We
picked up a hitchhiker/backpacker; we took pity on him as there were not going
to be many cars out this way. He is a
student from Montreal studying to be a nurse and we gave him a ride to the
trail we were going to hike. We saw him
on the trail and at the destination as well.
He had flown to St. John’s from Montreal but wasn’t having too much luck
hitchhiking so he took a bus here.
After
the hike, we went to Trout River to check out the campground (in the park) and
the town of Trout River. After fiddling
around with positioning ourselves into a campsite, we decided that with all the
bugs flying around our motorhome (and we didn’t even get out yet), we were not
going to be happy here (savings $25.50 as we had not checked in yet). We intend to stealth camp somewhere in the
town of Trout River. After all we didn’t
need anything from the campground anyway (especially not the bugs).
if you look real close you may be able to see our rv in the pix |
A
word about “Timmy’s” (Tim Horton’s…coffee, and muffins). Our Canadian neighbors have fully embraced
Timmy’s offerings. We often use Timmy’s
to check our emails (sometimes we go in and sometimes we can get connection
outside). No matter what Timmy’s we go
to, there is ALWAYS a very healthy line up of cars waiting to get their coffee;
it doesn’t matter what time of day it is either (especially morning and
afternoon though).
Our dinner spot at Trout River Pond |
Dinner
and then a walk by Trout River Pond.
Down by the pond it was much windier and the bugs were all up at Trout
River Campground. Wish we could
overnight here as the scenic vista is absolutely breathtaking.

Distant mountains |
Oh,
so we are sitting in motorhome and playing computer games and all of a sudden I
notice, no wind noise and look outside the windows. BUGS, tons of them, more than I’ve ever seen
in one place…like they just popped into existence and they are hungry. They
want inside this motorhome really badly.
Swarms of them! Good thing it is
cool enough (just) that we don’t have to open the screens up…every time we do a
couple sneak in somehow.
Every ounce of my being is telling me it is time to head north away from the bugs! Coming shortly we will be making our way into Labrador...the big land where we will travel the gravel road (some is paved) with our motorhome.
