Day 34 - Otter Pond Trail head to a snowmobile path...

Day 34/June 6, 2016 – Otter Pond Trail head to a Snowmobile path…

Walking the Otter Pond Trail...you can see our rv in the distance
A quiet night…very quiet like most nights…not a sound…except at one point I heard an airplane which I haven’t heard in awhile.  Dead quiet at night is a wonderful thing.  David is still looking for otters…  Still have not seen any of the 110,000 moose that inhabit this sizable island…supposedly more moose than people.

We did the short 1.5km walk around otter pond after breakfast.  Nice trail but the caution signs in the beginning should have been a note on the trails condition.  The cautions signs are on all trails but this one they were true.  We made it all the way around but there were numerous places where it had collapsed over water (not dep but bog or running water).  We picked our way carefully through these areas and nothing else collapsed…enjoyable nonetheless.

Baie Verte Peninsula
Drive  to Grand Falls to find a starter for the motorhome.  It has been acting up lately and needs to be replaced ASAP before it quits on us while we are in the boondocks with no auto parts store remotely close.  Called first place to see if they had it in stock (no, and it would take a week or two to get it!).  Luckily the second place had one in stock!!!  We would have waited a day or so if we needed but not more (hopefully).

Grand Falls provided us with propane refill after two weeks (refrigerator and cooking), food shopping, money procurement (TD bank no fees in Canada as we have an account in usa), Gas fill up/Canadian tire (rewards card…not sure what we are going to buy but we have $15 to spend so far)…and flat space for David to change out the starter.  We spent hours there.

Baie Verte Peninsula
Off to explore the Baie Verte Peninsula; we have been here before but will explore it all this time around.  It took us a couple of hours to get there from Grand Falls-Windsor with a stop for eating.  We took route 213 and took at look Smith’s Harbor and Middle Arm…both were rather picturesque.  All the while we were looking for a place to park overnight and really weren’t coming up with anything four times we drove up gravel or dirt roads and they were wrong (too hilly, house there/oops, too wet, etc).  We were beginning to lower our standards…low an behold we found on close to the road and within 3 miles of where we turned off to route 413.  It was a snowmobile road with plenty of room for us to park for the night.  Since we sat way too long today, we got out and walked some of the snowmobile path and then flipped it and found another logging road across the street that we also walked.  It felt good to move some at least.  Saw moose tracks but no moose!  Actually not sure I really want to see one on foot…
